Where is America?
There's a show on the Travel Channel called "5 Takes: USA." The premise is that 5 people from other countries travel the US, experiencing the nation, so to speak. I've not seen it, but I've seen the advertising, which asks for suggestions. That got me to thinking (watch out!):
Where would you send someone to see "America?" Or some regional subset? To visit Liberty Island and see "...your hungry, your poor...?" Perhaps Ellis Island and see the start that so many had on these shores? Maybe the Grand Canyon and see the majestic wonderment that this land holds? What about South of the Border to see the commercial kitsch that is Americana?
What do you think?

How 'bout The Mexican border, to see where we are building a wall to keep out "your hungry, your poor," or Congress to see where the Patriot Act was passed, or the Canadian border, so they can see our neighbors to the North sticking out their tongues at us.
Sorry... too bitter?

On a trip from SanFran to Columbus (OH) we saw signs in Kansas for a 6000 lb prairie dog and a 5-legged cow.
Also, The Dock at Pensacola Beach used to host nude volleyball tourneys.
The gallows in Tombstone, AZ haven't gone to rot yet. Very educational for the kids to see that. :)

America has loads of stuff, some really cool, some really fun, some really sad, and some just plain creepy. I don't think there's any one particular thing that one could see in order to "see America."
I'll take a stab at some top fives:
Really Cool:
5 - The Mall in D.C.
4 - Mount Rushmore
3 - The Grand Canyon
2 - Statue of Liberty
1 - The Rocky Mountains
Really Fun:
5 - Direct TV
4 - IMAX in 3D
3 - Appalachian Trail
2 - Water Parks
1 - Theme Parks (w/ Roller Coasters)
Really Sad:
5 - US Prison System
4 - The D.C. Beltway in Rush Hour
3 - Inner Cities (pick one)
2 - Vietnam Memorial Wall
1 - The Holocaust Museum
Just Plain Creepy:
5 - Ripley's Believe It or Not(pick one in any tourist trap city)
4 - Walmart
3 - Circus Sideshows
2 - Hitler Items Scattered Across America
1 - Annual Testicle Festival (in Oakdale, CA, among other places)
