The Ongoing Computer Saga

We're still trying to salvage the computer; avoid buying a new one. I was able to get it up in Safe Mode, but couldn't manage to save anything to CD. I couldn't get it to format the HD from there, but we brought in a WinXP disk and just started to install over top of it (which includes a format, I believe). It got about halfway through the installation process and kept missing files or something, so it sits there, even less use than before. Saundra ordered a USB CD drive, which may help the process, possibly. If not, well, I guess it's a new comp.

[sigh]

Bits of Thought

Here's an interesting news story out of Georgia. Apparently, a student got a call from his Mom, who's serving in Iraq, during lunch. At this school, it's against the rules to talk on your cell phone during school hours, so a teacher told him to hang up. He rightly refused (though possibly profanely), and got suspended for 10 days (as an alternative to arrest).

Now, if he reacted as they say (and I've no reason to think he didn't), they may be completely right to suspend him. However, if he started with a polite refusal and explanation, and the teacher pressed the issue... Regardless of the right or wrong of it, I think it's going to stir up a huge outcry. It's just too easy and satisfying to scream at the injustice of it all (whether or not it's unjust).

And now for something completely different...

My wife bought a PS2 the other day; bought 2 games for it the next day: Enthusia, and God of War. It makes me wonder (yet again): how on earth did I get so lucky? She was the impetus behind the set-up in our room. One half of our room has a recliner loveseat, mini-fridge, microwave, wide-screen TV, XBox, and now PS2. And, her laptop (which I'm using until we get the desktop repaired or replaced). What a wife!

Yay! Dangit!

Yesterday's walk went fairly well. The weather was dismal, but the crowd was having fun anyway. I'd have been the same, but I was a bit under the weather (ok, bad pun). Still am, a little. It was a pretty good day regardless. I raised $301.50 personally (a personal best), and the team even more. A good day for the babies.

On the flip side, my computer died with extreme prejudice. A lovely new blue screen of death greeted me, and reappeared after rebooting. Dangit! On one hand, it's a great excuse to get a new computer. On the other hand, there's lots of good info on that computer that I'd hate to lose. But, when I can't get onto the computer to troubleshoot...dangit.

Zero-sum game, I guess.
